“Young Shiites in the Netherlands and Belgium” This article is a presentation and analysis of a research conducted among 88 young Dutch and Belgian Shiites. Via an online survey these people were questioned about three main themes: their religion, their ethnicity and their Dutch or Belgian citizenship. The authors are interested in the way the young Shiites think about these subjects, particularly because there is a growing estrangement between autochthonous Western-Europeans and the Muslim communities; in the light of this development, it seemed interesting to the authors to which extend the three themes form – important – parts of the way the Shiites construct their identity. Keyterms: Shiites, The Netherlands, Belgium, diaspora, identity, ethnicity, religion, citizenship.
